Seville, November 12 – MIGASA, the leading agri-food company in Andalusia by turnover and the main exporter of olive oil in Spain, is, as of today, also the first company in the olive oil sector in Spain to obtain the “from Waste to Resources” seal: Zero to landfill”. Diego Gallego, President of MIGASA, received this seal today in the presence of José María Bellido, Mayor of Córdoba, and Blanca Torrent, President of the Municipal Institute for Economic Development and Employment of Córdoba (IMDEEC).
This certificate represents and makes visible the social and environmental commitment of this family owned company that has carried out a process of conversion of resources and training of its work teams to obtain it. Obtaining the seal “from Waste to Resources: Zero to landfill” means that the waste from its plant in Alcolea (Córdoba), dedicated mainly to the packaging of oils, is reintegrated into the production processes as raw materials, not arriving in this way to landfills.
“Obtaining the “Waste to Resources: Zero to Landfill” seal is a landmark for our company, focused on sustainability and efficiency, and it would not have been possible without the commitment of our entire team: not just the 150 workers of our Cordovan plant, which have been key, but of the entire company. We believe in the excellence of our work and in the responsibility, we have with the improvement of our environment, both social and environmental. These values that the more than 1,200 people who are part of MIGASA share are what have undoubtedly allowed us to receive this demanding seal today,” said Diego Gallego, president of MIGASA during the delivery of the certification from César Martín-Duarte, Director of the South Zone of SAICA NATUR.
MIGASA has become the first national company in its sector to have the distinction “from Waste to Resources: Zero to landfill” betting on the promotion of the circular economy and the sustainability of its processes from its Cordoba plant. The mayor of Córdoba, José María Bellido, has highlighted “the importance of having companies in Córdoba that are a benchmark. That they invest time and resources to transform their business and become more
sustainable, and that they do so by innovating in a traditional and fundamental sector for our productive fabric”. Bellido also recalled that “the promotion of the circular economy is part of the roadmap of this City Council. We are directing our policies towards the Sustainable Development Goals to achieve a healthier and more habitable city, through the collaboration of all the actors involved”.
The seal “from Waste to Resources: Zero to landfill” means that at least 95% of the waste produced in the processes of the MIGASA plant in Cordoba is reintroduced into the industry as raw materials, preventing it from ending up in landfills and promoting the circular economy and the goal of 0 waste. In this sense, the Delegate for Economic Reactivation and President of IMDEEC, Blanca Torrent, recalled the importance of “the revitalization and reactivation of our economy go hand in hand with respect for the environment and sustainability. It is not only a need and a commitment, but also an important asset for our SMEs, and a tool that also makes it possible to increase competitiveness and generate new opportunities. And it is important that the agro-industrial sector, one of the engines of our economy, leads by example”.
For his part, the provincial delegate of Córdoba for Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Ramón Pérez, pointed out that MIGASA is “an example of what is happening in the industry, the main engine of our autonomous community, and in our province with innovation, sustainability and the commitment to the green revolution and the circular economy, and which coincides with the pillars that the government of change of the Junta de Andalucía is promoting. Precisely this week, in which they have been debating at the Glasgow Climate Summit, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has valued that impulse and support from the Junta to the agri-food sector, because we want to lead that change. A sample of this work is the certification obtained by MIGASA, which reflects the innovation and sustainability that is making Andalusia a leader in this field. And the agro-industrial sector can count on us to continue advancing in this line through public-private collaboration”.
